Great films I haven't seen

I really think this post will ruin any credibility my previous recommendations had since there are some pretty landmark films I haven't seen. Again I'll go for 5.

1. One flew over the Cuckoos Nest

It appeals but just never got round to it, perhaps a lend/rental in the near future.

2. Rear Window
I know the plot well enough to appreciate the Simpson's parody when Bart breaks his leg & witnesses Flanders "murder" his wife but have never seen the original. Must be good, it's Hitchcock.

3. It's a Wonderful Life
Can't believe this one has slipped me by. Everyone I speak to says this is a great film, some even say it's their favourite. This must be on over Xmas!

4. Citizen Kane
wtf? How come I haven't seen this, I mean it says it's terrific right on the poster. Again I know the twist and am aware of the multitude of parodies out there but haven't seen the original.

5. Life is Beautiful

Bought this as an Xmas present for my parents last year (they asked for it). When I heard the plot I was pretty intrigued. Here is the synopsis from imbd...

In 1930s Italy, a carefree Jewish book keeper named Guido starts a fairy tale life by courting and marrying a lovely woman from a nearby city. Guido and his wife have a son and live happily together until the occupation of Italy by German forces. In an attempt to hold his family together and help his son survive the horrors of a Jewish Concentration Camp, Guido imagines that the Holocaust is a game and that the grand prize for winning is a tank.

While it sounds quite harrowing it is apparently pretty funny and a touching tale of a fathers devotion
Might get them to dig it out on boxing day when we are too stuffed to move.

Great films you may not have seen

I'm not a massive buff but there are a few films I have seen recently that I think are pretty special. I'm purposefully choosing non-blockbusters since there is less chance I'm telling you something you already know.  I'll say 5 and see how we go......

1. 12 Angry Men

Film about 12 jurors discussing the verdict of a murder trial. The film is shot almost entirely in 1 room and focuses completely on the interaction between the jurors and the fact surrounding the trial. The acting is first class, so much so that the fact it takes place in 1 room doesn't really enter your mind. I won't spoil the plot but you should give it a watch. Oh and yes, that is a young Quincy M.E. at the front.

2. Hotel Rwanda

Based on the true story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who gave shelter to around 1000 Tutsi during the atrocities in Rwanda. While Hollywood tends to distort facts in films that are "based on a true story" theres no denying this is an amazing story that should be seen.

3. The Usual Suspects
5 career criminals are brought in on suspicion of a crime they didn't commit, and are convinced to plot a revenge job by the boogey man of the criminal underworld, Keyser Söze. Needless to say it all goes pear shaped with loads of people getting killed. Won't say any more but the first time I realised the  twist in this film it blew my mind, I have loved it ever since. The accent on Benicio Del Toro (that's Benedict the Bull to you) still cracks me up and of course Postlethwaite is his amazing self as Kobayashi. Not an original pick but definitely one of the best.

4. Leon
Leon (Jean Reno) is a hit man who has worked alone all his life, Mathilda (young Natalie Portman) is a girl who's family is murdered by a crooked detective who is involved in some highly suspicious Canderel transportation (or so my innocent eyes lead me to believe). Leon takes in the young girl and they get an exchange thing going, he teaches her how to "clean" re: kill for money and she teaches him that life is worth living. Fair deal.
It really is the relationship between the 2 that makes this film work, it's kind of an odd couple buddy story thing. I'm not normally a fan of Portman, pretty much unimpressed by everything I have seen her in except this (I haven't seen Black Swan yet and I hear it's her best role so I may be being premature).

Actually this is getting tough, trying to pick a good film that everyone hasn't seen, how about......

5. The Insider
The story of a tobacco company executive who, despite extreme pressure from his former employers, reveals to the world that not only did the company know that cigarettes were harmful and addictive but that they had active research in place to increase the addictive nature of cigarettes. Now I can't get on my high horse about this one (I'm a social smoker myself) but you can't argue that the acting here is pretty spot on. Crowe's reserved and socially awkward Wigand plays brilliantly alongside Pacino's outspoken and silver tongued 60 minutes reporter Lowell Bergman. Pacino definitely gets the better  lines but there's some great support throughout, this one sucks you right in.

Up next will be my "list of films I can't believe I haven't seen yet"

Nature > Cool

How ace is this?

Those of you in the games industry might think this is easily achieved with a simple loft but nature does it with more class.

Really great art blog

If you are ever in need of some artistic inspiration or just appreciate good artwork, have a browse through here. Some amazing artwork in all kinds of styles.

Here is a personal favourite from Frank Stockton

The characterisation in all his work is superb, you really feel like you know the subjects just from their pose. He also plays with distorted/false perspectives to good effect which ties in well with the distended proportions of his characters.

I might break off the purely art related posts from this blog into a seperate area so people can find only posts relating to their topics of interest.

Santa Monica Photo Montage

Recently went to Santa Monica, thought a photo montage with massively overblown music would work pretty well.

Couple of people have asked how I did the time lapse at the end. Basically my camera has a feature to take 1 photo every 2 seconds & then stitch them together as an avi at 25fps. So it ends up that 1s of movie time is about 1 minute in real time but for this movie I think I sped it up even further to fit the music.

I think it's quite a common feature on modern compact digital cameras & DSLRs. Quality suffers a little since the resolution is limited to 640x480 but still not a bad effect.

I'll have to set it up for a starfield timelapse next time I'm out in the country.
